Echoes of the Bayou: A Celebration of Houston Black Stories, Community & Culture

Meredith J. Long Theatre Center | Neuhaus Theatre
615 Texas Ave., Houston, TX 77002

The culminating event of the NEA Big Read project brings the voices and creativity of the community to life through an unforgettable evening of storytelling and visual art at the Alley Theatre. Inspired by Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, the event honors themes of resilience, empowerment, self-discovery, and the vibrant cultural tapestry of Houston’s Black communities.

Featuring a powerful blend of curated stories, performances, and visual art created by program participants, local artists, and community members, the evening explores the intersection of race, gender, and identity. This dynamic celebration sparks meaningful dialogue, strengthens community connections, and highlights how literature and the arts illuminate and shape our shared experiences.
